Note: A family member saw this stone in the 1970s,
but even at that time it appeared to be partially buried and in poor
condition.
We found no evidence of the stone in the summer of 2007.
Our understanding is that the tombstone was a flat one and is/was in the
northwest area of the cemetery - near the cluster of various crude native
stones.
Matthias A Andis
Matthias Andis's place of birth is unknown to us, although we
know
he lived in Frederick Co, MD and served in the militia during the Revolutionary
War.
He first appears in the records of Washington County, VA when he
purchased 199 acres in Rich Valley, Washington County, VA from
John Young for 80 pounds on September 07, 1788.
He was enumerated in the 1790 census in Frederick County, MD with
2 females in his household. However, this census may have been taken
as early as 1788. The next reference to Matthias is his marriage to
Susanna THOMAS on January 03, 1792 in Washington County, VA.
Matthias died c. 1810. Matthias and Susanna had eleven children:

Susannah (married Isaac B "Blackhawk" Fleenor),
John (married Elizabeth Mary "Betsey" Lewis),

and Mary Ann (married William Rush).
